Welcome to HLDD.

How many hidden feelings are behind a smile?

“Allowing a student with Hidden Learning Difficulties & Differences to struggle academically or socially when all that is needed for success are appropriate accommodations and explicit instruction, is no different than failing to provide a ramp for a person in a wheelchair. ”

What is HLDD?

HLDD was set up to raise awareness of Hidden Learning Difficulties & Differences in children and the effects on their mental health.  Hidden Learning Difficulties & Differences are everyday challenges for children with SpLD (Specific Learning Difficulties) as well as many other conditions such as ADHD, Autism and Anxiety to name a few.

We want to unhide the hidden and the stigma around children with differences. We have discovered that children in school who have difficulties and differences can’t always ask for help. Their interactions at school can sometimes be detrimental to their mental health. Whether it be from a teacher in the classroom, to a lunch assistant or even their friends in the playground, children are not always able to understand, respond and process information given to them in the same way as children who do not have these difficulties and differences. Their confidence and emotions can mean that within the school a child with a hidden difficulties and differences could be screaming on the inside and smiling on the outside.

Our Plan

A simple wristband is worn by children to help teachers and all members of staff within a school environment, to easily identify children where learning is difficult, different and hidden.

Children wearing a band makes it quick and easy for all staff and other children within the school environment to easily identify them. Anyone within the school grounds will recognise that children wearing a band may need a different type of help, support and encouragement. The band also reassures the child that teachers, staff and the other children are aware that their difficulties and differences are hidden.
